相対性理論 – Liquidroom, Ebisu

By Jordan September 11th, 2009

I occasionally do this thing where I completely forget to get all the details on something before I decide on a course of action and follow through. It happened again today. For some reason I decided in my head that the 相対性理論 show I wanted to see tonight was in Shibuya. It wasn’t. 7:00 PM show start. I decide to arrive a bit late. Get to Shibuya. Go to where I think I remember the map on Liquidroom’s website said that club was and find nothing. Manboo time. I put up ¥200 for all of 5 minutes in a booth with my mistress, the internet. Life is apparently unfair from time to time. Ebisu has a bridge with Shibuya in it’s name. Note to self: “D’oh!” Run to Shibuya station. 2 minutes. Get to Ebisu. It is now about 8:00 PM. I get to the club. Go up some stairs and U-turn down some stairs. Try to get in. A very unimpressed girl asks for my ticket. “I don’t have one yet,” I coyly answer. Up the stairs again. I’m getting warmer and just a tad bit grumpy because I can hear her voice downstairs. ¥4,300 stands in the way of me and the music. “Just give me that damn ticket and let me in already!” I’m in a full sweat at this point. Open the big black door.

And there she was…

She barely moves. Her mouth moves only so much as is needed to force the sound through it. She looks down a lot and touches a piece of her clothing. Looks up. It’s the same face she had on a second ago. She looks in my direction as if she is numb to the fact that she is the center of everyone’s attention. She sees right through the walls. In the back the guys are wailing on their instruments. The pulse in the room is frantic, but no one is moving that much. Heads are moving, but that’s about it. The band starts playing 品川ナンバー and I stand on my toes to see if it will bring more out of her. The lyrics come out at a faster pace than most of their other songs, but her delivery doesn’t look different at all. This amazes me. Her lips are moving faster than my eyes can perceive. The rest of the band cuts out and all you here is the base pulsing. It lasts about two seconds, but it’s brilliant and makes me want to jump at the clap. She’s telling someone she loves them. Her voice floats upward, but she’s standing perfectly still. The emotion coming from behind her builds and the guitars are crying out. It’s an amazing combination. I’m smitten. The music stops and she says “おやすみ.” I begin deflating almost immediately.

Despite getting there late, I can’t complain. I paid a lot for those 20 or so minutes and it was worth every yen. Can’t wait to see her again.

I have to give thanks to Marie from luxe lonesome for introducing me to this amazing sound.

EDIT: Fixed the totally wrong kanji for the band. All apologies.

Wow! These guys blew up like crazy on 2chan a year or so ago, but I had completely forgotten about them until reading this. thanks for reminding me. I’m glad to see that they are doing well, but their sound seems to have changed quite a lot. Still legit, though.

That’s interesting. They don’t strike me as band that would catch the interest of 2chan. One can never tell, I suppose. Their sound is much more refined on their second album. I’m a bigger fan of ハイファイ新書 than シフォン主義. Every song on it is amazing. Seeing them live was absolutely amazing. I’ve seen a lot of acts in the States, but I’ve never seen one as beautiful and strange as 相対性理論. Well, maybe Tool was more beautiful and strange, but almost to the point that it burdensome.

  3. VoidMare Says:

Haha, I’m an idiot. I meant to type NicoNico, not 2chan. Sorry about that.

  4. Jordan Says:

Ah, OK. I thought it was a little strange, but now I’m gonna have to go snoop around NicoNico for some goodies. Thanks for the tip, buddy! You gonna go to Umezu’s live on the 26th, I take it?

  5. voidmare Says:

Oh yeah! I´ll be covering it for TSB. I think it´ll be pretty obvious who we are, so say hello if you go.

  6. Jordan Says:

I’ll be there for sure. I’ll be looking for you!

  7. VoidMare Says:

Hey dude, missed you at the Umezz live. Were you there?

  8. Jordan Says:

Ah, I really wanted to go, but something came up at the last minute and I was forced to deal with it. I was pretty bummed out about it too. I’m going to the Tokyo Game Show this Saturday though so I hope that will kind of make up for it. At any rate, we should hook up at some point here in the future!
